A Hurting
Word...
There's a secret hidden in the desert....but before we uncover it, let's look around. It IS a fascinating place--unless you're STUCK there! And stuck we were, one vacation time several years ago, with two young children in car seats, a hot light flashing, this mom begging that dad to turn around and go back to civilization. We made it back and survived to tell the tale! I don't recommend your trying THAT trip unless you are well-equipped--with a lot of grit and grace--a lot of wit and water will help too!
You see, I'd read about the mysterious, daring desert in a book--a scary fictional drama that intrigued me as I sat safe and cool in my own home. Slight difference when you're THERE! And so it is with our spiritual lives. We read of real-life drama in God's Word; we thrill to the victorious intervention of the Lord--and then we experience the REAL "stuff" in our own life...and it's a whole different story--or is it? Come with me to the well. It's in the desert, the players are in place and the drama is about to unfold...
A Helping Word...or
Two!
God's Word to enlighten and secure the mind!
The devil rules in the desert--or so he thinks! Jesus, Son of the Living God, weary and hungry, surely will give in to His flesh. Surely He will command, "Stones, be made bread," and He will satisfy the pangs of hunger He feels. The devil's got Him this time, for in a moment of weakness, a man will surrender his strongest will to the flesh. The mind will play tricks on a tempted man, and he will give in. But not THIS Man....
Listen to the Kingdom Lord as He addresses His adversary, "It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God." And with that Word firmly implanted in His mind and heart, our Lord overcame the wiles of the enemy--for Himself, and for us! We need not surrender to the flesh when we allow HIS word to rise up within us, to garrison our minds and to defeat the power of the evil one. His Word is power and it is LIGHT--learn it, memorize it, hide it in your heart--and the flesh will fall in defeat, for HE is the Living Word, He is Truth, He is Lord!
God's Fire to Strengthen and Warm the Soul!
Deserts turn cold at night, very cold--especially when there's a devil trying to weaken your soul, to tempt you to surrender to his demands. "Jesus, if you are God, throw yourself down from the high pinnacle of the temple--angels will protect you. Be presumptous; be coldly calculating and show me your power; If you are God, You can do it!" Surely Christ will display His divinity and do a real power play for the underworld--but not THIS Lord...
Listen as Jesus, God's Son, worn by emotional duress but warmed by the Spirit of God, knew better! Hear Him declare to the devil, "It is written...thou shalt not put the Lord, thy God, to the test." Satan lost and Jesus won round number two--for Himself and for you! Emotionally, you may feel devastated by the enemy. He's taunted and tried you to the limit; you'd feel GOOD showing him how great your God is. But stop--you need not prove to the devil nor to anyone else what your God can do. Don't let your emotions rule you in the testing time--God will defend you mightily, in His time and in His way. Cling to His Word, let it strengthen and warm your soul. You WILL survive the attack of the devil. You are not alone, for HE, the STRONG One, the Kingdom Lord, is with you to uphold and strengthen you in your trial--He IS Lord!
God's Voice to Sustain the Spirit!
The devil's not done with God's Son yet. Once more, he attacks Him, this time on a high mountain where He can view the kingdoms of the world. "Bow down and worship me," the taunter says, "and it's all yours." But this time, Satan said his evil words to the wrong Person. The kingdoms of this world, with all their glitter and glory hide only sin and evil underneath. They may be controlled by Satan now--but God will not be mocked. Satan is a faker--was a faker then, is a faker now--and Jesus, God's Son, knew it!
Listen as the Kingdom Lord once again says, "It is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God and him only shalt thou serve." Once again Satan was defeated by the Word of God. The voice that would someday calm the sea and speak resurrection to a dead man raised itself in power to proclaim, "It is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God and Him only shalt thou serve." You can say it too--"Devil, don't tempt me with earth's treasures--my spirit seeks HIm only who is Lord of my life!" In the midst of the battle, get still enough to hear His voice. "It is written" will sustain your weakened, worn-down spirit. Let not your spirit be disturbed by the test and trial, for as He speaks to you through His Word, that powerful, living Word WILL sustain you. He still speaks in the desert--and He will speak in YOURS, for He's your Lord!
But what about the secret of the desert? I discovered it last week. Now deserts and Disney don't seem to mix, but in a very strange way, they did for me last week--and therein lies the secret of the desert! Three words: "Light, Sound 'n Fire!" The place? Epcot Center in Orlando, Florida. I visited wonderful countries of the world by day--and I thought of Peggie's Place reaching around the world with His love. I watched by night the lovely display of fireworks, I heard the booming sounds and saw the gorgeous glow. It was awesome--but not as awesome as the Lord who spoke to me in the middle of it all. He spoke light to my mind; a still, small voice to my heart and warmth within my soul. "Light, Sound 'n Fire" in the middle of my own desert place--and in the middle of yours too--that's His plan for all His beloved believers. After all, He KNOWS--He's been there; He's conquered the foe, and HE IS LORD--Kingdom Lord of your heart, your world and your life--worship HIM! He'll be the light, sound 'n fire in YOUR desert today--for it is NO secret what God can do!
...and that's just a word or two from my heart to yours!

"Lord, I'm in a desert place and I need You--I need Your Word to enlighten my mind; Your voice to sustain my spirit and Your fire to strengthen my soul. Let me live in Your Words, "It is written," and know Be light, sound and fire to me this day! In Jesus' Name, Amen.
