Saints Alive: Remembering the Martyrs 50 Years Later Sunday, January 8, 2006
by Greg Asimakoupoulos
Fifty years ago today
five men died while families prayed
that the Lord would spare their lives
and yet none of them survived.
On a beach each one was speared
by a tribe all others feared.
Savages they'd hoped to win
sharing how God cleanses sin.
On that Lord's Day each was killed.
Was this what He really willed?
Hadn't they been called to go?
Where was He? I'd like to know.
In their screams did He not hear
as the natives threw the spear?
Why were they left on their own
in that jungle where they'd flown?
Then I think I heard God say,
"I was there that dreadful day.
I wept with their grieving wives
as they learned about their five.
But I knew what would take place
when the widows shared My grace.
How the killers and their clan
would repent and hear My plan..
How each one would own their shame
and give up their killing game.
Through the guilt of what they'd done,
they believed in My dear Son."
Jim, Pete, Roger, Nate and Ed
lost their lives. But they're not dead.
In God's presence these brave five
are forever saints alive.
Fifty years ago they found
martyrdom is holy ground.
From their blood God's purpose grew.
So don't judge it 'till He's through.
